Specialists from the State Agency of Water Resources of Ukraine have presented preliminary results of the ongoing update of the National Water Cadastre under the section \u201cSurface Waters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the update, more than 80,000 rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and ponds have already been digitized. This is particularly important for assessing water supply potential for communities and regions across Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Agency\u2019s working group, which includes representatives from basin management authorities and regional water resource offices, has digitized and populated attribute data for more than 60,000 polygon water bodies and over 19,000 linear water features during the current year. This includes the creation of vector data for rivers shorter than five kilometers where ponds are present, as well as lakes, reservoirs, and ponds based on both paper and digital records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts are also developing guidance documents to standardize coding systems and attribute information in line with future reporting requirements under EU environmental directives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Agency, the Surface Waters section of the National Water Cadastre provides critical information for water allocation and permitting, water balance assessments, land management, regional development, spatial planning, fisheries management, and the updating of river basin management plans and flood risk management plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cWater Resources of Ukraine\u201d geoportal was established in 2017 in accordance with EU requirements. Its ongoing modernization is essential to ensure that water resource information is aligned with contemporary digital technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials emphasize that this work is particularly important because it confirms the official status of water bodies. This helps determine whether a water feature should be classified as a river or a canal, whether riparian protection zones must be established, and whether development activities may be permitted along its banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development and broader application of the Water Cadastre is also supported by the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture. This contributes to Ukraine\u2019s European integration commitments by demonstrating not only the formal adoption of environmental standards but also their practical implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, access to the National Water Cadastre is available only through an official request to the State Agency of Water Resources.
