Experts from the WASH Programme of Caritas Ukraine participated in the Meeting of Heads of Delegation of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), where they presented the humanitarian dimension of water security in times of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the invitation of the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine, Tetiana Yatsiuk, Head of the WASH Programme at Caritas Ukraine, and Lesia Basarab, Senior WASH Expert, joined the meeting. They were the only representatives of civil society among delegates from 12 Danube-region countries, international organizations, and government institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the meeting, Caritas Ukraine drew international attention to the devastating consequences of the war for water resources, critical infrastructure, and local communities. The experts explained how damaged water treatment facilities, destroyed water supply systems, and the increased pressure on utilities in communities hosting internally displaced people are affecting Ukrainians’ access to safe drinking water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, Ukraine assumed the Presidency of the ICPDR for the second time in its history, setting three key priorities: strengthening water resilience in the face of climate change, assessing the impact of the war on the Lower Danube and Danube Delta ecosystems, and enhancing international cooperation to protect the river basin’s water resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An important part of the presentation was the photo exhibition “Water in the Fire of War”<\/strong>, which documented the humanitarian and environmental consequences of Russia’s full-scale invasion through photographs and stories from affected communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A newly established international working group will continue assessing the impact of the war on the Danube River Basin\u2014from water pollution caused by missile and drone strikes and damage to wastewater treatment facilities to the increasing pressure on water supply systems in Danube Basin communities hosting internally displaced people. This work is particularly significant, as the Danube Basin spans 19 countries, is home to 83 million people, and provides drinking water for more than 20 million.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
